Project - Saving Sophie -July 2010

Sophie is Home
After over 2 weeks at AnM Sophie is finally back home. Though she was acting fine and eating well for past 5 days her liver enzymes were off the charts and vets at AnM did not feel comfortable sending her home. She had blood tests every daybut no one was sure of the cause or the treatment for the condition.

All through this she wagged her tail, flicked the canned food out of her cage and demanded fresh cooked boiled chicken and rice. As she went through different procedures, got handled by different people, rushed around the hospital she kept her spirits up and never ever snapped at any one no matter what. She won everyone’s heart and earned special privileges like getting half an hour play time outside with students instead of customary 5 minute potty dash outside. She had her special blankies as one or two were not enough :0.

She is enjoying being back at home and has already conducted her morning inspection of the sanctuary. Her siblings seem to be happy to have her back and are following her around. She will need to be checked very 3-5 days by a vet over here. Blood work and glucose curves will be done during this time.

Our bills have reached around $8000.

Our Chip in has stalled at $950.

We understand that times are tough for everyone and every one is trying their best to help out as many as they can. There are so many worthy causes out there needing help.

We are trying to raise money in as many ways as we can.

Please see if you can help us in any way in any of these fundraisers. Please pass it on to family and friends and cross post.

Ocean is filled one drop at a time. Be a drop for us.

Every little bit helps even $5 add up eventually.

Aug 7th Update - Latte for Sophie
Sophie's Liver enzymes have finally started to come down. She is still at AnM but looks like she may be coming home soon. We are keeping our fingers crossed. As her time to come home is coming closer so is time to settle the bill. We are still really short. We know times are tough and there are so many pleas for help out there. Houston rescue community has come for our rescue before and we know how hard it is for animal lovers when they can't help. We know lack of money doesn't mean that people don't care it just means people's resources are running thin.
You don't have to donate big amount, small amount can add up. After all ocean gets filled one drop at a time.
So we are requesting once again for help. Would you give up your latte for today for her? May be your lunch? or may be something else? If every one donates $5 or $10 it will add up. If you have something to spare please don't hesitate. No matter how small the amount. You can donate via chip in or our website or send us a check at the sanctuary.
Please pass it on and cross post.
Thanks for your help.

Last one week had ben really tough as staff at AnM was trying to figure out why her liver enzymes were so high and her jaundice not getting better. On Friday there was talk of a surgery which was really risky.
All this time Sophie was acting happy and normal, eating like a horse. Hanging out with students in the sun and taking long naps under her blankie. She has become a favorite there due to her up beat attitude.
Some of her students admirers call her - Ray of Sunshine, Tough Cookie, Tough Nut, Smiley Face etc etc.
Her vet admitted that she is a big dog person but Sophie is amazing and she is in love with a small dog first time in her life. She also told me that its been a great learning experience for the students and staff. Sophie had been pricked, poked and been rushed around to x-rays, ultra sounds etc but she lt them do it all. She never snapped and gives kisses to evry one. Our little girl has been a perfect patient.

If you have something to spare please don't hesitate. No matter how small the amount. You can donate via chip in or our website or send us a check at the sanctuary.
Please pass it on and cross post.
Thanks for your help.

Update - Sophie Aug 1st 2010

This morning I drove to College Station once again and spent some time with Sophie in the park at A&M. It was a great pleasure to see her up and running. Sophie sniffed many and would have smelled every tree, every fallen leaf, and almost every blade of grass if she could have! She enjoyed sun bathing but rolling in the grass was much tougher than usual with all the medical tubes, etc. hanging off of her. When she heard people walking by her ears perked up and she ran over to them to get some head rubs and ears scratches. Her little tail wagged so hard this morning I am sure it must be sore now :) We had a picnic in the park though she was too busy enjoying being outdoors and did not eat as much of her chicken as I would have liked. But as she had breakfast earlier with the vet students, I was told not to worry. She still has to stay at A&M for 4-5 more days but its not bad as she has several dedicated students wrapped around her little paws :)

Many of you have questioned why we would spend so much money on one dog. I understand how you feel. Unfortunately, as animal rescuers we can’t save all the dogs all the time but we can save one dog at a time.  And in my life, today that one dog is Sophie.

In this world, every day most of the decisions are made with brains based on practicality and monetary consequences. Its nice to make some decisions with the heart and out of faith. What is this world with out faith and unconditional love!

Compared to a week ago, Sophie now looks and acts like a new dog with spirit and spunk. Today is the first day of the rest of her life. Please join us in wishing her a happy home coming soon!  And PLEASE contribute to her medical expenses if you are able and willing.  Below is the ChipIn link.  THANK YOU!!

Check out her pictures in the park picnicing :).

Sophie Update - Saturday Morning July 31st 2010

Sophie is doing better. She is eating but only when hand fed and only boiled chicken no can food. At the sanctuary when any of the kids get sick we hand feed them so all of them expect it when not feeling too good. And ofcourse we cook for them. Our healing cusine for pets have helped us in healing lot of our kids. Her lungs ar much better now and she is breathing normal. Pancreas is still swollen and pressing the liver causing elivated liver enzymes. But her DKA situation is resolved no Keetones! Pancreatitis is still persisting but vets are more positive now and thinks it will resolve slowly in a week or so more. Means she has to still stay there for another week. We still need help with vet bills as 2 weeks of stay and all the blood work and ultra sounds are adding up to existing bills. Please help how ever you can. $5-$10-$50-$100 all add up. If you can't help right now please pass it on to others who may be able to. Thanks for prayers and love sent to us. We need it.

Sophie Update - Thursday - July 29th 2010

Sophie is finally alert! She had a spoon full of food and tried to wag her tail.
Vet thinks that if she eats for next two days on her own she will make it.
Sophie is a fighter and we knew she would fight hard.

Some of you may be wondering why we
are fighting so hard for her. Why won't we just let her die and use the money to save others. That's the decision rescuers have to make every day. Every day at the shelters old, sick and injured are put down because its a number 's game. Shelters do not enough resources and they try to save as many as they can. Which means young, healthy and cute have a better chance of survival.

We founded the sanctuary to help the unfortunate ones that other wise won't have a chance. We take in old, sick, injured, special need ones knowing that it will cost a lot to heal them and get them well. Some one has to do it. We take them in knowing that they may never get adopted and may stay at the sanctuary forever.

Here its not about quantity its about quality. When any animal arrives at the sanctuary we promise them that we will be there for ever for them and that we will not let them down. Some times that promise comes with a hefty price but in the end its worth it.

We have saved animals from the brink of death when everyone else has given up on them. We have stood by them even when vets said chance of survival was very low and we are always rewarded with life. We don't know its our faith or our love which helps these animals fight hard but they always fight hard and surprise everyone.

We are lucky to have A&M who has saved many of our animals. We are the lucky ones. Thanks for keeping Sophie in your prayers, crossposting and donating. We are at 11%. Its a long way to go but we will get there with all your help. Miracles have happened before and we are sure it will happen this time too.

with love
Sophie and Priyanka

Sophie  - Tuesday - July 27th 2010

We need your help to save Sophie. She is one of our special need dogs at the sanctuary.

Sophie is12 yr old blind and diabetic Min Pin in trouble.
Sophie is in emergency care at A&M for past 3 days. Her liver is failing, her gall bladder may be clogged, her pancreas is not functioning, and her lungs are not functioning properly. She is a very very sick little girl who is fighting hard to survive.

This little girl loves life and doesn't let blindness slow her down. Every morning Ms Sophie goes around all over the sanctuary and inspect every corner. When she is done you can hear her little claws ticking on wooden stairs as she races upstairs for her breakfast. During the day she follows rest of the pack and even tries to chase squirrels without even seeing them.
She loves sun bathing, rolling in grass and getting pampered. She doesn't even create a fuss when we give her the insulin shot twice a day.

She hasn't given up yet and neither have I. We had snatched her from jaws of death before and we are ready to do it again. She was rescued by us around couple of years ago when we got an email from someone whose colleague was going to put her dog down because dog was diabetic and turned blind. With few hours to spare we managed to whisk her away to our sanctuary. She arrived full of spirit and filled that sanctuary with her optimism and great outlook towards life.

She is fighting hard and we are fighting hard for her. Our vet bill is expected to be some where around $5000-$6200. We need help raising the money to pay the bills. You all have come thru for us before and have been our guardian angel several times before. What ever help you can give is appreciated as always. Please also pass it on to your animal lover friends.

You can donate through our website or thru Chip in.

Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH)

While I was busy with one emergency and trying to save Leah’s life there was a bigger tragedy unfolding in Haiti. Now there are several others who are trying to save hundreds of lives. I have put a small section on the same page as Leah about Animal Rescue efforts in Haiti.

Leah and I are the lucky ones who have all your support. But down there all these unfortunate animals don’t have anyone yet caring for them. To help these victims Animal Relief Coalition of Haiti has been formed. Several organizations have come together to put a rescue operation together. You can find organizations who are trying to help animal victims of Earth Quake in Haiti here. Please pass this information on and help however you can.

Project - Save Leah

Thursday 21st Jan 2010

5 Am emergency and gassy Leah

At 5 O'clock in the morning my cell phone rang. It was Leah's new mom Linda. She was worried sick that something was wrong with Leah. According to her Leah woke her up around 4 O'clock and since than she was having rumbling noises all over her stomach and chest and some shivering. I threw on my jeans and tshirt and ran out the door without even my purse. Driving at full speed I showed up at their door at 5:30 in the morning. I didn't know what to expect. Nose in her chest didn't sound like a good situation.
Mom opened the dorr and there was Leah wagging her tail and looking very pleased at early visitor. As we hugged and she licked me I checked her gums which looked pink and fine. I listened to her breathing it was little stressed but not too much. So we walked to the living room and I lied down and LEah snuggled next to me. I checked her all over she looked and acted normal. Than I heared the rumbeling sound coming from her stomach. Mom said she tried to feed her but Leah won't eat or drink. Not a good sign. So I tried but no luck. Then I remebered something my mom told me long long time ago. Bread soaks up the acid in the stomach and if you are hungry and if you eat bread then drink water it swells and you feel full. So I asked Linda if she had some bread. She brought some and Leah ate little bit then little bit more and little bit more. After 3 slices she lwas done than I tried to entice her with water but she won't drink. Then mom dipped her fingers and tried to give her water little bit at a time. And after 4 tried Leah rolled on her side and drank some. I took her out for slow walk but she didn't do anything. We came back in and Leah passed gas and then some more and then some more. All the rumbeling sounds finally stopped. I think gas was moving in her stomach cavity and making noises.
Once all the gas got displaced by bread and water noises stopped though air quality inside the house went downa few notches :0.
I am glad that Leah's new mom is so attentive to her. She was apologetic about a false alarm but I was glad that called me. I would rather get 10 false alarms than miss a serious situation. So I told Linda to call me any time. I hope she will if any unsual thing happens. Hopefully situation won't be as smelly as this time :).

Leah's new mom Linda took Leah to her family vet today. Dr Moore of Village Vet called me to let me know that our little girl is doing good. She doesn't have fever which means she is heaaling good. She was feeling little perky today so mom told me that she will be keeping close eye on her to make sure Leah doesn't try to jump on sofa or bed. Leah will be literally on short leash.
I also hear from her vet and Student vet at Texas A&M. They wanted to know how she was doing and wanted to stress one more time how incediblt special she is. we are not out of danger yet but if she keeps healing and stays out of trouble we will be in few days.

Yesterday we got $200 donation from Dog Deserve Better. Please check them out if you don't know about this organization. Its one of our Hero groups. If we have a hero award they will get it.

Our Angel award goes to Friends of Montgomery County Animal Shelter. Not only they donated $1000 but they are also accepting donations on Leah's behalf and giving people tax deduction benefit through their 501c.

Last evening I sent out an email at my work about Leah and by this morning I had $400 walk in my office door.

Lot of people have come together to help us and Leah. We couldn't have done this without you. We went ahead with the treatment without any money in our bank account. We had faith that money will come and it has been coming. Thanks to all of you for sending it and forwarding our plea to your friends. And thanks for all the prayers you sent our way.

Update on Leah

Leah is Home!

Thanks to all of your prayers. Leah is Home!

Spent most of the day at A&M but it was worth it. They did few more X-rays to make sure everything is still ok. Leah was up and about just hanging out with her vet student friends. Wagging tail and thumping it on her bed. We had a small procession as we walked out. Leah had made lot of friends who took care of her for past four days and everyone wanted to say good bye. And wanted me to promise them that I will keep them posted on her everyday J. After all that they did for her I will be happy to.

We left in the late afternoon from there and I delivered her to her new family directly. I didn’t want her to come to the sanctuary and get excited after seeing all her friends. She remembered the home visit there and was very comfortable. She sprawled in the living room on the floor and invited everyone to give her belly rubs. Son was ready with her food and water. She ate and snuggled with him. I left her surrounded by lots of love mom, dad and a pal.

Vets are amazed at her fast recovery. Her lung is still swollen and has water. It’s still not fully inflated. But she was looking so much better and alert. In spite of all the shaved patches all over her body legs, sides and belly she looks beautiful. Her loving soul shines through her eyes.

She is on meds to help her with the water in her lungs as it could turn into Pneumonia. Vets are still not sure about the surgery. If it was a lung bust because of too high pressure, which is a main suspect, hole will be small and heal itself slowly. If she has any pre existing condition that made her lung burst than she will need surgery. But due to inflation they can’t tell as inflation may be sealing the hole right now.

She is on complete bed rest. Mom, dad and son are at her service. She is off walks and will be served breakfast in bed J. Her outings will be on very short leash. Basically step out and step right back in. No chasing squirrels or trying catching birds. Her next visit to A & M will be in 14 days if everything stays ok.

At that time she will have another set of X-rays, cardiogram to access the damage to the heart and ultra sound. If there is no fluid in her lung and swelling is gone and lung is fully inflated we will be home free. So please pray for those results.

Thanks again for all your prayers and donations. Her next visit in 14 days is expected to be around $500 for all the X-rays, Cardiogram and Ultrasound.

Some of you have asked if you can donate directly by calling A&M as you feel more comfortable donating directly and knowing where the money is going. Unfortunately A&M has refused. According to them they don’t have resources to accept multiple small payments for patients. They are not giving us any discounts either as according to them they don’t give discounts to shelters or rescues. But they are the best and they have saved Leah’s life.

All is not lost though. If you don’t feel comfortable sending the money to us directly, you can send it to our sister organization which is well known 501c. It is called “Friends of Montgomery County Animal Shelter”. They are accepting donations of Leah’s behalf. Please make a check to “Friends of Montgomery County Animal Shelter” and send it to us. We will pass it on to them and they will give us money for those. Or you can send a check directly to them with a note stating it is for Leah and they will pass it. You will get tax credit for that.

 Leah – The miracle child

I just returned from A&M. Leah is doing good. Sr. Vet and 6 vet students came out to talk to me about Leah. They wanted to tell me how incredibly wonderful and special she is. How she licked them instead of growling and biting them when they had to tap her chest, poke her with needles and stuck tubes in her. How even after all the pain and mishandling she would try to wag her tail and roll on her back. Sr. vet said he is a cat person but Leah is special and he gave me his personal email and home phone to make sure I will keep him updated forever about her. He said his life would be much easier if all his patients were like Leah. Then he told me what a miracle child she is.

According to him we got her there just in time. She would have died in another 30 minutes. She survived on one lung for over 2 hours and her oxygen level in her blood was dangerously low. They were expecting her to stay in oxygen chamber for 3-5 days but she is already out and breathing laboriously but in regular air. They can’t explain her fast recovery but I think all the prayers and students who hung around her whole night holding her paws as she moaned in pain may have something to do with that. She is not out of the woods yet. Next one week is critical. She will be on complete bed rest on her return tomorrow. She may still have to go for surgery in two weeks depending upon her lung condition. Due to lack of oxygen there is some heart damage expected. There will be more chest x-rays and cardiogram in two weeks to assess condition of her lung and heart.

Her lung is not fully inflated yet. It is really inflamed and swollen due to being collapsed for over 2 hours. She has water in her lungs from the trauma but is doing better than expected. Leah needs to stay calm and still for next week or two as her lung heals. Future adoptive family has offered to take her in on her return so she doesn’t have to be at the sanctuary with all the other dogs. They are preparing a room where son will sleep on the floor with Leah in a sleeping bag so Leah doesn’t have to jump on the bed.

Please keep praying for her.

Help us Help Leah

Thursday Jan 14th 7 PM

We rescued a young girl around 12 days ago. She was dumped in front of the grocery store by some heartless people. With limp in her paw but wag in her tail this girl was trying to seek help from all the shoppers who passed her by. She rolled on her back, she followed people to their cars and she even whimpered but to no avail. Then some one called us at the Pure Mutts Sanctuary for help. And we rushed for her rescue. By the time we got there she had been there for few hours. We saw her sitting alone in middle of the parking lot tired and hungry. When we approached her she didn’t get up whole day of rejection had gotten to her soul. But when we petted her head and put the leash around her neck she perked up and she limped and hobbled to our car. Once inside she put her head on our lap and went to sleep. She was exhausted. We promised her that we will take care of her and our commitment to her is till death do us part. At the sanctuary she met new friends had a full meal and warm place to sleep. Next day princess Leah was happy girl. She got along well with everyone and everyone loved her.

Fast forward.

Leah went for her Spay surgery yesterday and we got a call around 10:30 that something has gone horribly wrong and they were losing her. As we were driving to the vet we got a second call that she is in distress and it may be too late for her. We told them to do everything they can to save her. By the time we got there they were able to stabilize her but she wasn’t looking good. We were told that she had lung embolism during surgery and was still in distress and could not breathe fully.

We have never given up on our rescues and we were not going to start. So we called A&M and they agreed to take her in emergency care. So we mad dash at 100 miles/hr to College Station. After several tests we found out that she had a collapsed lung due to high pressure oxygen administration under anesthesia. Her lung had burst. We still don’t know if it’s a weak zone in the lung that gave in or if there is a hole in her lung. Her chest was full of air which was keeping her lung from expanding and air was pushing her heart up out of her chest cavity. They tapped her chest and got 1.5 liters of air out. Then they were able to inflate her lung back. She was put in the Oxygen chamber and she has been there since yesterday.

Our bill is at $3500 and climbing. If they have to go in for the surgery, estimate is $5000 or up. We need help with the bills. Leah is a lucky girl. She already has a wonderful family waiting for her for adoption. We love the family. This family wanted to adopt our old, arthritic, incontinent dog. They even went home and checked on diaper option for her J. But finally they settled on Leah in spite of her limp. During our home visit family was more than fine with Leah taking over the human’s bed. Leah’s story has a happy ending written all over her as long as we can save her.

Due to Project Compassion, a broken leg and few other vet emergencies our credit cards are full. We are broke but we are not giving up on this girl. We will beg, borrow or steal. Though stealing is not an optionJ. We are borrowing against our credit cards and we are begging you for help. Our little girl has survived human cruelty, let’s show her human generosity. Please help us help Leah. $5, $10, $50 or $100 what ever you can send will help Leah and us out.  Please forward it to your friends and family. You can send us a check to : Pure Mutts Animal Sanctuary, 2463 Bill Smith Rd, Conroe, TX – 77384 or

Use a paypal button on our website. Thanks

 Hurricane Ike Parvo Puppies

  • These 9 puppies and their mom survived Hurricane Ike, starvation and Parvo. Only few weeks old and they have already seen worst of humanity and suffered one of the most life threatening diseases and still made it. They were left tied outside during hurricane Ike. Family evacuated without providing adequate shelter, food or water. I can't imagine how frightening it must have been for them to live through a night of horrible thunderstorm, raging winds and non stopping rain. On top of that a tree fell and injured their mom. Luckily not too bad. Family did not return and on fifth day concerned neighbors called Pure Mutts Animal Sanctuary for help. When we got there puppies were starving, mom did not have any milk as she hasn't eaten for 5 days at least or may be more. Everyone was weak and emaciated. They were rushed to the sanctuary where they were given bath, food and water and warm bed. But their ordeal was not over. Due to all the stress and starvation their immune system was compromised and one week after arriving at the sactuary they started falling sick one after another. As vet did not have electricity or place to hospitalize 9 puppies they were given a zero chance of survival. But at Pure mutts we do not give up easily. Priyanka took a short course in giving shots and IV and brought puppies home. Vet was kind enough to provide guidance and medicines to treat the puppies. It took everyday three and half hours in the morning and evening to give the puppies their three shots each and IV for two weeks. But with help of holistic and modern medicines and all the care all of the puppies made it.
  • In their short life these puppies have seen enough pain and suffering. Pure Mutts is looking for special forever homes for these love bugs. These kidddoes are full of love and energy. Yes they will be hands full but they will fill your home with love and laughter. These puppies are around 3 months old and are going to be between 45 to 65 lbs. There are 7 females and two males. They are Staffy mix.
  • We would love to see these puppies go to homes where they will have companionship of other pups, dogs and kids. Please consider adopting one or two of these lucky pups. All the adoption fees will be used to save other Ike victims. We have so many. Please check out our other adoption candidates.
  • Please see pictures below of Puppies when they arrived tired, starved and wormy. Plus picture of Puppies now. Full of life and mischievious.

Cindy - Puppy Mill Mama Dog

Mom is a sweetest thing. Her body tells the story of Puppy Mill Mom. We think she may be 3 or 4 years old and has already spent most of her life breeding puppies tied to a tree. We don't even want to think where all those puppy wound up. We are glad we are able to save her and her puppies this time.  She will never give birth to another litter ever again. She was emaciated, starving and thirsty when we picked her up. She did not resist. As we picked her inour arms she just put her head on our shoulder. We knew we have a lover in our hands. She was light heartworm positive. We had to wait for her to gain weight as she came to us skin and bones. Lack of food and nursing babies was a double whammy for her. We got her all fatten up and fixed and now she is getting her heartworm treatment. She is a great mom. Even after starvation she let her puppies eat before her. She stopped eating when ever her puppy demanded nursing. She would nurse them first and then finish her food. She is Mom of the year. Lucky for her all of them are whinned off.

After all that she has gone through she is still so loving to humans that it humbles me to think that dogs are far superior from humans when it comes to forgiveness. I know so many people who got chasesd, scratched or bit by a dog once and for their whole life they have turned anti dogs. And there are dogs that have abused and almost killed by humans who give humans another chance and love us inspite of all our folies. "To err is human, to forgive Canine".

She loves to put her arms on my shoulders and give me hugs and kisses. If you are looking for a lover who deserves to be pampered and loved here is your chance.

GoofBall and Buddy

Neighbors told us that both adult males were used for breeding and had spent most of their life tied to a tree. Most of the time without food or water in middle of summer. Both were hurt from a fallen tree. Scars on their bodies tell the story of life of neglect and abuse.  They love being hugged and kissed. They love humans - adults and kid and all they want is lot of love and attention. If you move too quickly or raise your hands or have something in your hand they instantly get scared and become submissive indicating they have been abused or beaten by humans before. But still they are ready to trust and love again.

Both got along with our females and submissive dogs but when challenged by one of the alpha male both took a stance. We think they need to be either an only dog child or in home with dog girls and no other male dogs. They both love girls. Puppies run all over them and they just let them. We are not sure about cats.

Silent Victims of Haiti

While I was busy with one emergency and trying to save Leah’s life there are bunch of others who are trying to save several hundred lives.

Please pass this information on.

Some of Our Resident Spoiled Brats

Moti and Taz
In Friendship size doesn't matter.

Picnicing in the park

Shopping at Lowes

Moti
She stole my heart and gave me a soul. Enough said.
My first unintentional rescue that changed my life forever.
She saved me from self centered, competitive and materialistic world. She taught me unconditional love, self sacrifice and giving.Yup she rescued me.

Frolicking in the Flood Waters

Taz aka Yoda
Moti's first rescue. Though Camera adds 10 lbs in this case we can't blame it. Taz has a weight problem and to manage that he only eats home cooked veggie rich food. yes at the Sanctuary all our sick animals get home cooked Holistic food. Our goal is to feed every animal at the sanctuary home cooked meal instead of dry food.

Taz needs to sit on the softest cusion or pillow

Suzie goes Splat
We met more people through Suzie than any other way. She loves to meet and greet people. She can jump 6' fence, climb walls and squeeze out of 5" hole. She has more friends in the neighborhood than we do. We haven't met everyone yet but she has. Due to her disappearing act she had been returned 3 times after her adoptions. Concern about her safety made us decide that she will stay with us forever. She plays hard and rests harder.
